Emergency Preparedness Week, or “EP Week”, runs from May 6 to 12 this year.  It is an excellent opportunity for those who already have home or office emergency preparedness plans, 72-hour kits, or mobile “bug-out” supplies to re-check their stocks and review their plans.

Niagara Police Gun Club Lease Extended

The Region of Niagara has agreed to a councillor’s motion to extend the lease of the Niagara Police Revolver Club until July 31, according to a Niagara This Week article earlier this month.

The lease for the facility had been set to expire today, and would have shuttered one of the few shooting ranges in the Niagara area, which is operated mainly by and for the benefit of Niagara Regional Police officers. Continue reading

ANALYSIS: Quebec’s Court Ruling Problematic

This week Bill C-19 received Royal Assent, instantly rendering irrelevant RCMP records of over 7 million non-restricted firearms in every Canadian province and territory – except Quebec.

The Quebec government, which has long had passionate political and social arguments for keeping the registry, won an 11th hour delay in the implementation of the law in that province, obtaining a Superior Court injunction. Continue reading

Bill C-19 Receives Royal Assent

Bill C-19, the Ending the Long Gun Registry Act, received Royal Assent yesterday and has now come into effect.

The act has removed the requirement to register non-restricted firearms with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program, and imposes a requirement on the government to destroy existing registration records for these firearms. Continue reading

CBC Features Look Back At McMynn Kidnapping

The police investigation into the kidnapping of Vancouver resident Graham McMynn is now the feature of a CBC’s the fifth estate online interactive documentary.

Graham McMynn was kidnapped from his car while driving on a Vancouver street with his girlfriend in April of 2006.  The son of a wealthy businessman, he was held for 10 days before police located and freed him. Continue reading
