Licencing
All persons who wish to own, possess, borrow or acquire firearms in Canada must be the holder of a valid firearms licence, or be exempt under one of the criteria under the Firearms Act (e.g. peace officers, public officers, military personnel, and non-residents who possess a confirmed firearms declaration).
In order to obtain a licence, the applicant must demonstrate they have the requisite firearm safety training in accordance with the Firearms Act. Individuals may choose to take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) or Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC), unless they are between 12 and 17 years of age or have previously been prohibited by law from possessing firearms, in which case it is mandatory to complete the course. All applicants must show successful completion of the applicable safety course tests for the type(s) of licence they are applying for.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is responsible for the administration of the Canadian Firearms Program. For more information about firearm licencing, safety training, or registration, see http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pafc/index-eng.htm, or call 1-800-731-4000.
